About Andrew Dettman

A counsellor who works at the point where change gets stuck.

Andrew Dettman, addiction counsellor and founder of Diction Resolution Therapy

In Andrew's words

I have spent decades working with people who are not failing through lack of effort. They are stuck at a specific point, and no amount of willpower moves them past it. That is where I work.

My background spans rehab settings, 12-Step practice, CBT, and more than thirty years of personal mindfulness. Over time I noticed a pattern: the people who struggled most were not weak or unwilling. They had a stuck switch. Healthy problem-solving includes a temporary, focused drive to resolve something and then a return to normal. In stuck-addiction, that return does not happen. Life narrows. Mood drops. Meaning fades.

Diction Resolution Therapy grew from working with that pattern directly. It addresses the language we use internally, the clarity of our intentions, and the structure that lets change hold under pressure. It is practical, focused, and designed to work where other approaches have stalled.

The approach

Diction Resolution Therapy works at the exact point where other approaches stall.

Most people focus, solve, then switch off. In stuck-addiction, that switch jams. Life narrows. Mood and meaning slide. DRT repairs the inner on/off of healthy problem-solving.

The method combines three things: clearer inner language to reduce panic and increase precision, focused will with a concrete next step, and a safe therapeutic structure so that change holds under pressure.

Used alongside CBT, which lowers distress quickly and provides immediate tools, DRT addresses the deeper pattern. CBT gives you brakes. DRT repairs the engine.

Diction

Clearer inner language. Less panic. More precision and choice.

Resolution

Focused will with a concrete next step. Training the on/off switch.

Therapy

Safe structure so that change holds under real pressure over time.
